「 prestige 」の語源

1650年代、「トリック、幻影、詐欺」（現在は廃止された意味）からフランス語のprestige（16世紀）「欺瞞、詐欺、幻影」（現代フランス語では「幻影、魔法、魅力」）に由来し、ラテン語のpraestigium「幻想、幻影」（prestigiousを参照）から。

1815年頃から「個人の功績や重要性に対する幻影、優れた幻影」という意味で使われるようになり、したがって「卓越性、重要性、権威の評判」という肯定的な意味も持つようになった。これらの意味はおそらくフランス語から導入され、しばしばナポレオンに関連して言及された：

When the same question was put to those who knew him and France best, they answered, 'that a peace dictated in France would have undone him ;'—'that his throne was founded on public opinion,' and 'that if the prestige,' for so they called it, 'of his glory were to be destroyed, the state of his affairs, and the character of the French people forbade him to expect that his power would long survive it.'
