古英语 stille “静止的,稳定的,固定的,静态的”,来自原始日耳曼语 *stilli-(也源自古弗里西语,中低德语,中荷兰语 stille,荷兰语 stil,古高德语 stilli,德语 still),来自 PIE 词根 *stel- “放置,站立,整理”,其派生词指代站立的物体或地点。
“安静,平静,温和,沉默”的意义在后期古英语中出现。从1722年起用作连词。在提到孩子时,作为“死”的委婉语出现在 stillborn等词中。Still small voice 来自KJV:
