driver 的詞源

古英語 drifan “強迫或敦促移動，以某種方向或方式推動； 追逐（鹿）； 衝撞”（一類強動詞； 過去式 draf，過去分詞 drifen），源自原始日耳曼語 *dreibanan（也是古弗里斯蘭語 driva “我引導，推動，驅趕（離開）”，古撒克遜語 driban，荷蘭語 drijven，古高地德語 triban，德語 treiben，古諾爾斯語 drifa，哥特語 dreiban “驅動”），可能源自 PIE 詞根 *dhreibh- “驅動，推動”，但它可能是一個日耳曼孤立的詞。

古英語中用於指甲、船隻、犁、車輛、牲畜； 中古英語中用於交易。意思是“強迫或激勵採取任何行動或狀態”（drive mad）是在12世紀末。意思是“積極努力工作”約爲1200年； 意思是“瞄準一擊”約爲14世紀初。及物動詞的意思是“用馬車運送（某人）”，後來是指汽車，始於1660年代。原始意義上的“從後面推動”在現代英語中因應用於汽車而改變了。相關詞： Driving。
