14世紀後半、ethimolegia「単語の起源と発展の事実」、古フランス語のetimologie, ethimologie（14世紀、現代フランス語ではétymologie）から、ラテン語のetymologia、ギリシャ語のetymologia「単語を分析してその真の起源を見つけること」、正確には「単語の真の意味の研究」、-logia「研究、話すこと」（-logyを参照）+ etymon「真の意味、元の意味」、中性のetymos「真実の、現実の、実際の」、eteos「真実の」に関連し、おそらくサンスクリット語のsatyah、ゴート語のsunjis、古英語のsoð「真実」と語源を同じくし、PIEの*set-「安定する」の派生。シセロによってラテン語化され、veriloquiumとなった。

古典時代には意味に関連し、後に歴史に関連した。古典的な語源学者、キリスト教徒と異教徒は、歴史的記録やそれを分析する科学的方法が欠如していたため、彼らの説明は寓話と推測に基づいており、この学問は千年もの間評価を失った。フローベールは["受け入れられたアイデアの辞典"]で、語源学は「ラテン語と少しの独創性の助けを借りれば世界で最も簡単なこと」と一般的に見なされていたと書いている。

As practised by Socrates in the Cratylus, etymology involves a claim about the underlying semantic content of the name, what it really means or indicates. This content is taken to have been put there by the ancient namegivers: giving an etymology is thus a matter of unwrapping or decoding a name to find the message the namegivers have placed inside.
