「 melt 」の語源

中英語 melten、古英語 meltan（自動詞）「熱によって液体になる」（第III強変化動詞；過去形 mealt、過去分詞 molten）、原始ゲルマン語 *meltananから；古英語 gemæltan（アングリア方言）、gemyltan（ウェストサクソン方言）「液体にする、熱を用いて固体を液体状態に減少させる」（他動詞）、原始ゲルマン語 *gamaltijan（古ノルド語 melta「消化する」も同源）と融合。

両方のゲルマン語はPIE *meldh-（サンスクリット語 mrduh「柔らかい、穏やかな」、ギリシャ語 meldein「溶ける、液体にする」、ラテン語 mollis「柔らかい、穏やかな」の源）から、語根 *mel- (1)「柔らかい」から。中英語では「溶解する」（塩、砂糖など）、 「腐食する」（鉄の）、 「腐敗する」（肉の）も。 「一つの物から別の物へと imperceptibly 移る」という意味は1781年による。関連語： Melted； melting。

比喩的な使用「減少する、衰退する；感動する、優しくなる」は1200年頃；「柔らかくする」（愛、憐れみ、優しさに）の他動詞的意味は14世紀初頭。食べ物が melt in (one's) mouthになるのは1690年代から。 Melting point「固体が溶ける温度」は1807年による。 Melting potは15世紀初頭から；比喩的な使用は1855年から；イスラエル・ザングウィルの劇「The Melting Pot」（1908年）によるアメリカ合衆国における移民同化の言及で普及：

1854年、「溶融金属、溶けた状態の物質」を意味する言葉として使われ始めました。この語は melt（動詞）から派生しています。1956年には、アメリカ英語で溶けたチーズをトッピングしたサンドイッチ（通常はツナサンド）を指す言葉としても使われるようになりました。
