「 animalcule 」の語源

14世紀初頭、「感覚を持つ生き物全般」（人間を含む）を指し、ラテン語の animale 「生き物、呼吸する存在」から、形容詞 animalis の中性名詞形「有生命の、生きている; 空気の」から派生し、anima 「息、魂; 空気の流れ」（PIEルート *ane- 「呼吸する」に由来; 意義の発展については deer を参照）に由来。

1600年頃まで英語では珍しい言葉であり、KJV（1611年）には見られない。一般に非人間的な生き物のみを指す。古い beast の一般的な使用を駆逐した。1580年代から、野蛮な人間（「動物」または非合理的・非精神的な性質が優位な状態）を嘲笑的に用いた。
