「 contagion 」の語源

14世紀後半、「感染症」「有害な影響や腐敗した影響」という意味で使われるようになりました。これは古フランス語の contagion から来ており、さらに遡るとラテン語の contagionem（主格は contagio）に由来します。このラテン語は「触れること」「接触」を意味し、特に「物理的または道徳的に不潔なものとの接触、感染」という悪い意味合いを持っていました。語源をたどると、contingere（「触れる」）から来ており、これは com（「共に」「一緒に」、con-を参照）と tangere（「触れる」）が結びついた形です。この語はさらに、印欧語族の語根 *tag-（「触れる」「扱う」）に由来しています。「感染性の接触や伝達」という意味が定着したのは1620年代からです。

A distinction between contagion and infection is sometimes adopted, the former being limited to the transmission of disease by actual contact of the diseased part with a healthy absorbent or abraded surface, and the latter to transmission through the atmosphere by floating germs or miasmata. There are, however, cases of transmission which do not fall under either of these divisions, and there are some which fall under both. contagion（感染）と infection（伝染）の違いが時折見られます。前者は病気の部分が健康な吸収性または擦り傷のある表面に直接接触することで感染する場合に限られ、後者は浮遊する細菌や病原体によって空気中で感染する場合を指します。しかし、これらのどちらにも当てはまらない感染のケースや、両方に該当するものも存在します。一般的には、この二つの言葉を厳密に区別することはありません。[Century Dictionary, 1897]
