twitch 的詞源

約1400年， erþe-worme，是 Lumbricidae 家族的蠕蟲的通俗名稱，源自 earth 和 worm（名詞）。在這個意義上，古英語中有 eorðmata，也有 regnwyrm，字面意思是“雨蟲”。古英語還有 angel-twæcce “用作魚餌的蚯蚓”（第二個元素來自 twitch 的詞根），有時在中世紀被用作藥物：

「小鉗子；一種類似於小夾子的工具，專門用來處理小物件、拔除頭髮等」，這個詞出現在1650年代，源自tweezes，即tweeze的複數形式，最初指的是「鑷子盒」（1620年代），這個詞又縮短自etweese，被視為etwee（1610年代）「小盒子」的複數形式（同時tweeze也指「外科手術工具的盒子」，1620年代），來自法語étui，意為「小盒子」（參見etui）。

這個意義是從盒子轉移到裡面的工具。就形式而言，可以與trousers（褲子）來自trouzes進行比較。早期「鑷子、鉗子」的詞是twicches（複數），出現在15世紀初的醫學文獻中，與twitch（動詞）在其早期意義「拔除」相關。
