「 marriageable 」の語源

約1300年、mariage「結婚する行為」、また「夫婦である状態や条件、婚姻、結婚」、さらに「結婚による生涯の男女の結びつき、特定の婚姻関係」を指す。古フランス語のmariage「結婚；持参金」（12世紀）から、俗ラテン語の*maritaticum（11世紀）を経て、ラテン語のmaritatus（maritare「結婚させる、結婚する、婚姻を与える」の過去分詞形）から派生した（marry (v.)を参照）。この俗ラテン語の単語は、イタリア語のmaritaggio、スペイン語のmaridajeの源でもあり、mariachiと比較される。

「結婚の誓い、二人が結婚するために結ぶ正式な宣言または契約」、また「結婚式、結婚の祝賀、結婚式の儀式」という意味は14世紀後半から。比喩的な使用（非神学的）「親密な結合、結婚のような結びつき」は14世紀後半から。

Marriage counselingは1939年までにその名で記録されている。Marriage bed、一般的に婚姻 intercourseを比喩的に表すものは1580年代から認められた（bed of marriageは15世紀初頭から）。

「結婚するのに適さない; 結婚には若すぎる」、1660年代、un- (1) 「不適」+ marriageableから。

英語の形容詞の一般的な終止形および語形成要素（通常は他動詞に基づく）で、「可能な；責任がある；許可された；価値がある；必要な；または______されるべき」という意味を持ち、時には「満ちている、引き起こす」という意味を持つ、フランス語の-ableおよびラテン語の-abilisから。

正しくは-bleで、ラテン語の-bilisから（母音は一般的に接尾辞化される動詞の語幹の終わりから来ている）、PIE*-tro-を表し、道具の名詞を形成するために使用される接尾辞であり、英語のrudderとsaddle（名詞）の第2音節と同系である。

英語における生きた要素であり、ラテン語または母語の単語からの新しい形成に使用される（readable, bearable）と同様に、名詞と共に使用される（objectionable, peaceable）。時には能動的な意味を持ち（suitable, capable）、時には中立的な意味を持つ（durable, conformable）。20世紀までには、reliable witness（信頼できる証人）、playable foul ball（プレー可能なファウルボール）、perishable goods（腐りやすい商品）のように、非常に柔軟な意味を持つようになった。17世紀の作家はcadaverable「死すべき」を持っている。

ラテン語では、-abilisと-ibilisは動詞の屈折母音に依存していた。それゆえ、古フランス語、スペイン語、英語における変異形-ibleがある。英語では、-ableは母語（および他の非ラテン語）の単語と共に使用される傾向があり、-ibleは明らかにラテン語起源の単語と共に使用される（ただし例外もある）。ラテン語の接尾辞はableとは語源的に関連していないが、長い間それと一般的に関連付けられており、これがおそらく生きた接尾辞としての活力に寄与している。
