「 modesty 」の語源

1530年代、「誇張からの自由、自己制御」の意味で、フランス語の modestie もしくはラテン語の modestia 「節度、名誉感、行動の正しさ」から直接派生した言葉で、modestus 「適度、適切な測り方を保つ、禁欲的、穏やか、節度のある」から、modus 「測定、方法」（PIEルート *med- 「適切な措置を講じる」から）に由来します。「自分自身に対する適度な意見を持つ質、控えめな態度、傲慢さを嫌うこと、目立たないこと」の意味は1550年代から。「女性らしい礼儀、純粋さや思考または態度の繊細さ」の意味は1560年代から。
