「 hill 」の語源

古英語のhyll「丘」は、原始ゲルマン語の*hulni-（中オランダ語のhille、低地ドイツ語のhull「丘」、古ノルド語のhallr「石」、ゴート語のhallus「岩」、古ノルド語のholmr「湾内の小島」、古英語のholm「隆起した土地、島」の語源）から、PIE語根*kel- (2)「目立つ；丘」を経て、昔は山を含んでいた。

In Great Britain heights under 2,000 feet are generally called hills; 'mountain' being confined to the greater elevations of the Lake District, of North Wales, and of the Scottish Highlands; but, in India, ranges of 5,000 and even 10,000 feet are commonly called 'hills,' in contrast with the Himalaya Mountains, many peaks of which rise beyond 20,000 feet. The term mountain is very loosely used. It commonly means any unusual elevation.
