「 bard 」の語源

「古代ケルトの吟遊詩人」、15世紀中頃、スコットランド語から、古代ケルト語のbardos「詩人、歌手」から、ケルト語の*bardo-、おそらくPIEの*gwredho-「賞賛を作る者」から、語根*gwere- (2)「好む」の接尾辞形式。

歴史的には、ウェールズでは非常に尊敬される用語であったが、スコットランドでは（彼らを遍歴のトラブルメーカーと見なして）軽蔑の対象であった。その後、スコットは「抒情詩人、歌手」のより古い意味で理想化した。英語での詩的な使用は、ギリシャ語のbardos、ラテン語のbardus、どちらもガリア語から。
