「 reasonable 」の語源

1300年頃、resonable、「 sound judgment を持ち、reason の能力に恵まれた」という意味で、古フランス語のraisonableから、ラテン語のrationabilisから、ratio「計算、理解、動機、原因」から、ratus、「計算する、考える」の過去分詞であるreri（印欧語根*re-「理性を持つ、数える」から）に由来。

もともとは「合理的、健全な」という意味でもあり、これらの意味は現在は廃止されています。中英語では「良い判断による、または良い判断から生じる」という意味でやや意味がシフトし、その後「常識の範囲を超えない」という意味になりました。

「価格が適切である」という意味は1660年代に記録され、以前は「量が適度である」（14世紀）を意味しました。関連語としては、Reasonablyが14世紀後半に「理性に従って」、1500年頃に「かなり許容できる」として、reasonablenessもあります。

法律においては、「理性や健全な判断を持つ人にふさわしい」という意味で、reasonable doubt（1670年代）は、関連する理由を割り当てることができ、陪審員の心の中で告発の真実を信じることを妨げる疑念を指します。
