「 Jack 」の語源

男性の固有名詞で、1218年に記録があり、おそらくアングロ・フレンチの Jake, Jaikes から、古フランス語の Jacques（ラテン語の Jacobus の愛称; Jacob を参照）を経て英語に取り入れられたが、英語では常に John の親しみやすい形として認識されており、一部の人々はそれがネイティブな形であると主張している。中英語では Jakke, Jacke などと綴られ、2音節（「ジャッキー」）で発音された。

イングランドでは、Jack は14世紀後半から誰にでも（特に下層階級の若者に）親しみを込めてまたは軽蔑的に適用される一般名詞となった。後に特に船乗りに使われるようになり（1650年代; Jack-tar は1781年から）、Jack-ashore（形容詞）「飲んで陽気で、無駄遣いする」は船乗りからのイメージでもあり（1840年に書籍タイトルとして）、アメリカでは1889年から不明な見知らぬ人に呼びかける一般名詞として証明されている。Every man Jack「誰もが」は1812年から。jack (n.) も参照。

15世紀から男性の擬人化に使われた。jack-of-all-trades「どんな仕事でもこなす人」の最初の記録は1610年代（Tom of all tradesは1630年代）から。Jack Frostは1826年から。Jack-nasty「抜け目のない人やだらしない人」は1833年から（Jack-nasty-face、一般的な船乗りを指す海の用語は1788年から）。Jack Spratは小さく軽い男を指し、1560年代から（彼の対義語は Jack Weight）。Jack-pudding「滑稽な道化師、ばか者」は1630年代からで、イタリア語の Zan Salcizza（演劇や文学の滑稽なキャラクター）を翻訳したもの（zany を参照）。Jack-Spaniardは1703年からスペイン人を指し、1833年には「西インド諸島のスズメバチ」を指す。

Farmers & Henley に載っている他の擬人化には、jack-snip「不器用な仕立て屋」、Jack-in-office「横柄な小役人」（1680年代）、Jack-on-both-sides「中立者」、Jack-out-of-doors「浮浪者」（1630年代）、jack-sauce「厚かましい男」（1590年代）がある。supple-jackは強くしなやかな杖の一種（1748年）と子供の玩具などを指していた。

アメリカの植物 jack-in-the-pulpit（インディアン・ターンIP）は1833年から証明されている。Jack the Ripperは1888年にロンドンで活動しており、その名前は彼が書いたとされる「Dear Boss」手紙から来ている。スコットランドの形は Jock（jockey (n.) と比較）。Jack and Jill の頭韻的な組み合わせは15世紀からで（Iakke and Gylle, Ienken and Iulyan）、Jack Ketch「絞首刑執行人」のために1670年代から使われており、ジェームズ2世の時代の公然たる絞首刑執行人の名前から来ていると言われている（derrick と比較）。また、「絞首刑にする」という動詞としても使われた。

late 14c., jakke "a mechanical device," from the masc. name Jack (q.v.). The proper name was used in Middle English for "any common fellow" (see jack (n.1)) and thereafter extended, alone or in compound, to various mechanical contrivances or appliances which do the work of common servants and assistants or are liable to rough use (1570s, in reference to a machine for turning the spit in roasting meat); for this use compare billy, jimmy, Jenny. Jack also was used generically in reference to male animals (1620s, see jackass, jackdaw, etc.).

Specifically as a contrivance for raising great weights by force exerted from below, it is attested by 1703. As the name of a device for pulling off boots, from 1670s. The slang meaning "money" is recorded by 1890 (in earlier slang it meant "a small coin"). In telephony and telegraphy, "a terminal by means of which instruments can be plugged into a circuit," it is attested by 1891, in reference to the spring-jack switch in it.

For the playing card, see jack (n.3). The jack in Union Jack is a nautical term for "small flag at the bow of a ship" (1630s) and perhaps is from the word's secondary sense of "smaller than normal size."

Previously, the English equivalent of the French valet was normally known as Knave, in the sense of 'serving-lad'. In the seventeenth century it came to be called Jack, from the name properly applied to the Knave of trumps at All Fours. All Fours being a low-class game, the use of 'Jack' for 'Knave' was long considered vulgar. ('He calls the Knaves Jacks!', remarks Estella contemptuously in Dickens's Great Expectations.) When indices came in, it was obviously preferable to use 'J' rather than 'Kn' to avoid confusion with 'K' for King.
