「 fractal 」の語源

「終わりのないパターン」、1975年、フランス語のfractalから、最終的にはラテン語のfractus「途切れた、不規則な」、文字通り「壊れた」、frangere「壊す」の過去分詞（印欧語根*bhreg-「壊す」から）。フランスの数学者ブノワ・マンデルブロ（1924-2010）が「Les Objets Fractals」で造語した。

Many important spatial patterns of Nature are either irregular or fragmented to such an extreme degree that ... classical geometry ... is hardly of any help in describing their form. ... I hope to show that it is possible in many cases to remedy this absence of geometric representation by using a family of shapes I propose to call fractals — or fractal sets. この用語は、マンデルブロが1967年に出版した「イギリスの海岸線はどれくらい長いか — 統計的自己相似性と分数次元」の中で早くも提案されていた。
