「 *kaput- 」の語源

14世紀初、acheven、「遂行する、実行する、成し遂げる」；14世紀後半、「努力の結果得る」、古フランス語のachever（12世紀）「終わらせる、達成する、完了する」から、フレーズà chef (venir)「終了、完了した」に由来するか、俗ラテン語の*accapare、後期ラテン語のad caput (venire)から。フランス語と後期ラテン語の両方のフレーズは文字通り「頂点に達する」に意味し、ad「へ」（ad-を参照）+ ラテン語のcaput「頭」（印欧語根*kaput-「頭」から）。

The Lat. caput, towards the end of the Empire, and in Merov[ingian] times, took the sense of an end, whence the phrase ad caput venire, in the sense of to come to an end .... Venire ad caput naturally produced the Fr. phrase venir à chef = venir à bout. ... From this chief, O.Fr. form of chef (q.v.) in sense of term, end, comes the Fr. compd. achever = venir à chef, to end, finish.
