「 paraclete 」の語源

15世紀半ばに、Paraclitという聖霊の称号が使われるようになりました。これは古フランス語のparaclet（13世紀）から来ており、中世ラテン語のparacletus、さらには教会ラテン語でのギリシャ語paraklētos「弁護者、仲介者、法的助手」という意味の語から派生しています。この言葉は「助けを呼ぶ者」という形容詞の名詞用法で、parakalein「助けを呼ぶ」から来ていますが、後には「慰める、励ます」という意味でも使われるようになりました。これはpara（para- (1)を参照）とkalein「呼ぶ」（印欧語根*kele- (2)「叫ぶ」から）を組み合わせたものです。

もっと広い意味では、a helper, succorer, aider, assistant（助け手、救助者、援助者、助手）を指します。特に、キリストが父のもとに昇天した後、使徒たちのもとに来て福音の真理を深く理解させ、神の御国のために試練や迫害に耐える力を与える聖霊の役割を表す言葉として使われました……。[Thayer, "A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament," 1889]

しかし、この言葉は時折英語の聖書でAdvocate（弁護者）とも訳されます。これは「仲介者」という概念に基づいています。なお、この語はラテン語から直接借用され、paraclitus（13世紀初頭）としても使われていました。
