「 destine 」の語源

14世紀半ば、predestinaciounという言葉が登場しました。これは「神が特定の人々を恵みによって救いまたは永遠の命に向けて前もって定める行為」を意味し、古フランス語のpredestinacionや教会ラテン語のpraedestinationem（主格はpraedestinatio）から直接派生したものです。このラテン語は「前もって決定すること」を表す名詞で、praedestinare（「目標として定める」「前もって任命または決定する」）という動詞の過去分詞語幹から派生しています。さらに遡ると、prae（「前に」、pre-を参照）とdestinare（「任命する、決定する」、destine (v.)を参照）から成り立っています。

このラテン語は最初に神学的な意味でアウグスティヌスによって使われ、カルヴァンによって重要視されました。関連する言葉として、Predestinarian（「予定説を信じる者」）が1660年代に登場しました。

英語およびフランス語やラテン語から引き継いだ多くの動詞における能動的な詞形成要素で、ラテン語の de「下に、下から、から、離れて；関する」（deを参照）から来ており、ラテン語では接頭辞としても使われ、通常「下に、離れて、の中から、下から」を意味しますが、「底まで、完全に」つまり「完全に」（強調または完了）を意味することもあり、これが多くの英単語における意味です。

ラテン語の接頭辞としては、動詞の行動を元に戻したり逆にしたりする機能もあり、それゆえ「不、反対のことをする、元に戻す」という純粋な否定語として使われるようになり、これは英語での生きた接頭辞としての主な機能です。例として defrost（1895年）、defuse（1943年）、de-escalate（1964年）などがあります。いくつかの場合には dis- の短縮形です。
